# cheers
it escaped my memory! :D
edit : ...no that didn't work
any other ideas?

# If you're connected to a router,
it should tell you somewhere at 192.168.1.1 (or similar).
If you use a modem, ipconfig at the command prompt should tell you, I think.

# OMG, you hacker!!
how did you know the IP of my router?!?
(, Thu 21 May 2009, 23:51, archived)
#
according to Ipchicken (or whatever the website was) its 69.7.... something or other... i know the 192.16... etc is what its set up as...
where do i find what others see my ip as?
(, Thu 21 May 2009, 23:51, archived)
# It's the 69 (pfft) one.
The 192 one is your address on your local network.
(, Thu 21 May 2009, 23:55, archived)
#
yes.... but the internet displays that...
I want to see if my ipblocker is working ffs
how do i compare what the internet sees to what i see*?
*what i should be able to see compared to the internet
(, Thu 21 May 2009, 23:57, archived)
# you can't mask your IP like that.
if IP chicken sees your actual IP then that's what all the internet sees. And with that I have to bow out because I'm post wasting.

# IP chicken is wrong
you're not listening

# if you have an IP address, you ARE online
/networking pedant

seriously, if you mean, you do not want to fire up a web browser and go to ipchicken.com/ , your only other option is to do a 'tracert , and your IP will be the first IANA assigned non-private IP that you see
(, Thu 21 May 2009, 23:50, archived)
#
...yes but I want to check if my ipblocker (part of my firewall) is working correctly
edit : you mean type tracert -j in cmd prompt?
(, Thu 21 May 2009, 23:52, archived)
# or he could
just type "cmd /k ipconfig" in the run box.

edit:// look for your local area connection ( control panel /network ) and check out the properties - details for your current connection ( I can't show you on mine because I'm on Windows 7 and IPv6 and it's all very different.
(, Thu 21 May 2009, 23:52, archived)
# ...that didn't work
that brought up the router IP 192.168... not my IP address
edit : that displays the 192.168 rubbish...
(, Thu 21 May 2009, 23:54, archived)
# ipchicken shows your 'real' internet address....
basically (in most cases) that will be the IP address that the WAN port of your firewall/router device was given by the DSL or CableModem.

In order to check if that is secure, you can go to https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 .

# ip chicken is wrong because of the IPblocker... isn't anyone listening?
i've checked it before.... but i can't remember the command that displays it on your pc
(, Thu 21 May 2009, 23:59, archived)
# i'm stumped

# ....its not part of that
oh geesh
it used to something winipcfg.exe what is the modern equivalent?
(, Fri 22 May 2009, 0:05, archived)
# it's cmd /k ipconfig
that is the modern equivalent of winipcfg

i am truley sorry :( i just don't know.
(, Fri 22 May 2009, 0:10, archived)
# winipcfg.exe used to display the IP that the world could see
now it just displays my router settings... great
thanks anyways :) - stupid bloody microsoft arsebiscuits!
i'll just turn the firewall off and do it that way *sigh*
(, Fri 22 May 2009, 0:12, archived)
# true,
back when we were all on dialup, the winipcfg IP address was it.
In my former helpdesk slave life, my next question would be...
'what are you trying to do?'
(, Fri 22 May 2009, 0:18, archived)
#
what am i trying to do?
I am trying to find out if my IPblockerthingymgig is working as they claim it is!

# Don't get angry because no one has a clue what you're doing.
(, Fri 22 May 2009, 0:13, archived)
# i know what im doing
its windows xp that doesn't know what its doing!
98 and ME used to have winipcfg.exe which displayed the IP that the internet used to see
ipconfig.exe does not have this function
This has been discussed above and has now been resolved
Thank you for your input
