because my instinctive reaction to compulsory voting is that uninformed twats (as a whole) would decide the vote
yet it must work in countries that have it

It's compulsory in Australia
On one hand, politicians don't just pander to old people or special interest groups "because they're the only ones that vote", but on the other hand it turns into a bit of a popularity contest sometimes.
