In 1762 the House of Lords held that merely stepping onto British soil was enough for a slave to become a free man
which suggests we were well on our way to abolishing slavery long before the unpleasantness in 1776. They didn't just decide in 1806 to abolish it on a whim - there had been a growing uneasiness among academics and lawyers alike with the ethics of slavery for nearly a century.
