I have to agree
Fair play to them for trying something ambitious. If they pull of something great with this idea it will help them in future projects. How many student projects are made each year? It looks like they're trying to distinguish themselves as more than a bunch of students with a camera. £5,000/£10,000 is a lot of money for a student project but if they produce something that looks like its worth that much and helps their future career prospects then well done!
