I'm no connoisseur of horror I must admit
The only horror film I hold up as a masterpiece is The Shining, but it seems to be one most horror aficionados that I know don't. I find performances like Jack Nicholson's a lot more frightening than jumpy bits and gore.

I agree with you,
The Shining is awesome. Creepy film that stands time well. I like a lot of the older horrors. They didn't have the CGI capabilities like they do now so a lot more thought had to go into them I think. The Changeling wheelchair moment is a good example of this www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3GdPWzKfiE
