the 2000s were a time of rising jingoism and flag-wavy bullshit under the long conservative reign of Howard. People like those above thrive in these conditions like mushrooms on shit. And sydney gets the shock jocks on radio stoking it up and blaming mcigrants for destroying traditional aussie values (beer drinking and sunburn), which the other cities like melbourne are blissfully free of, so most of this shit happens in sydney

I agree
I was in Oz in late 90's, loved it and especially Melbourne. Returned in 2001 or 02 and the swing to a more racist society was visible everywhere. Mostly anti-asian but not solely. I decided not to pursue residency.
