This is a link post Contains football reference so will undoubtedly drop off the page without notice...
tl;dr:

After the recent Arsenal v Manchester City match, an assistant referee was caught on camera advising a City player to go over and thank their travelling fans, who had been stung for an almighty £62 per ticket.

A wholly reasonable piece of advice under the circumsatnces.

The poor sod's now been dropped from officiating his next game.

This is a normal post Hard to believe. It seemed like it was in passing, not like he was trying to bring attention to himself.

This is a normal post I think it was entirely spot on under the circumstances.
The fact that the players needed prompting to go ovwer and thank their travelling fans is up for debate, but the comment in question was a really sound piece of advice.

I saw the vid, i'm pretty sure they'd have gone over anyway after shaking the ref's hands first (as seems to be custom), sounded like a throwaway remark to me, good on him for getting a subtle jab in though, it did make me smile :D

This is a normal post Agreed...
I go and watch York city away alot and the players always make the effort to come over and applaud the fans after the game. Which is a nice peice of mutual respect when you've travelled hundreds of miles to watch them be shit.

They've handily made the video look like they all go over simply because he's told them too when the remark was to one player who probably wasn't listening anyway. Had he not made the remark and they'd have gone over this wouldn't be news, it fucking barely registers as news anyway.

York have a football team? Wow, you learn something new everyday :D

This is a normal post Yes I don't really understand what the fuss is about....
Everything seems normal here, game finishes... Players shake hands with officials/other team and then come over to applaud the fans...

to be fair, they'd probably walk over and applaud Ian Huntley if it delayed going back into a League 2 dressing room by five more minutes.

This is a normal post It was only a couple of months ago that people were asking for the mic feed from refs and linesmen to be public
and then the 1st time someone hears what a linesman says, he gets dropped.

This is a normal post He's been dropped for one match because they're worried about the media attention he'll receive.
It's not like he's been fired and banned from ever officiating again.

Same thing happened when they introduced a female ref and she got a call wrong or something, that was a lot worse as they stopped her officiating for longer and, worse still, they did it because they were worried about the grief she'd get from the fans reaction to her after making one mistake (which happens to male referees pretty much once a game and is soon forgotten).

This is a normal post I think their hope that it would reduce media attention has backfired.

By plastering the vid all over the beeb they've made sure he got the attention in the first place, now they'll defend him and then they'll plaster his return all over the beeb saying "Ref who made throwaway remark back to officiate..." and put a video of his return up.

This is a normal post sian massey...
the best thing about her is that I dont think Ive ever seen a call she has made that has been wrong, she is more consistent and often more assertive than many of her male counterparts.

It's great watching the football on telly and the "angry dads" gesticulating wildly at the stoopid woman calling someone offside, only for her to be proven right by countless video replays.

he's a neutral offical not some arbiter of pricing strategy. The guy is a dumbass.

I'm much more concerned about the guy at the same match that unfurled a banner and was threatened with imprisonment by the cops (who confiscated all of the banners) - All completely illegal.

football and money are like oil and water imho, and anyway, who forced these people to pay £62? as long as mugs continue to pay such over inflated prices the prices will continue to become ever more extortionate. in my experience the high price of premiership tickets justs feeds into a 'loadsamoney' mentality that exists on the terraces. they find it reassuringly expensive.
