This is a question Best and worst TV ads

"I'd like to give that dodo off the 5 Alive adverts a good kicking," says tom.joad. And luckily, there's tasty, tasty Cillit Bang to clean up the blood stains when you've finished. Tell us about TV adverts.

Fuck, I could go on for hours...
...but I don't have time right now. I'll think of some as the week goes on.

In the meantime, here's a generalism. I really, really despise the way they always make the adverts louder than the programmes:

TV PROGRAMME: 'More after this break' or 'jingly jingle jingle + show logo'
...then...
ADVERT TWAT: 'HEY, WHY NOT BUY OUR SHIT? IT'S TIP-FUCKING-TOP'

I'm guessing that I'm like most folk in that when I'm watching TV, I have the volume set so that it's loud enough to hear, but not loud enough to annoy me or my neighbours. Then adverts come on that place themselves well over this threshold and I hit mute for 5mins.

Surely this defeats the object of advertising whatever product they're trying to cram into my conciousness, that is annoying me before even getting into the content so that I essentially render them unable to sell me shit. Is it just me?

I think the idea..
.. is that you can still hear them from the kitchen/bog when you go out to make a brew during the break.

No less annoying for that.

That's...
...the magic of the mute button :)

I might be wrong
But i think the volume change is just because of the sound compression in the adverts. Adverts are rubbish and more compressed than normal TV programmes etc. Because it is more compressed it makes everything louder.

It certainly applied
before the age of digital TV, where compression was not an issue.

I think in fact, it dates from before mute buttons and has just never really been re-thought.

No, it's done deliberately.
There was a case recently where (may have been ITV) a channel was fined for having the ads too loud. There are guidelines to adhere to for volume!

don't about digital TV back home
but here in Spain, if anything it's got worse since digital TV came along - and now we're almost all completely switched off from analogue as well.

Yep it's compression
But in the old analogue sense - every sound is it the maximum possible volume allowed by law rather than having the natural variation that the programme does. So yes, on average ads are much louder but their peak volume is not higher than the programme.

It's the equivalent
of those links that stand out on certain webpages. They bugger me right off.

I always thought it was done so that if you fell asleep in front of the telly it'd wake you up to sell you shit.

Hell...
...if I was taking a nap in front of the box then got startled back to conciousness by herbal essences or some other similar wank, I'd probably need a new TV not long after.
