This is a question Brits Abroad

Union jack shorts, bulldog t-shirts, bars named after soap operas, hen parties in Malaga. Tell us about your encounters with the worst (or best) of our fair country's travelers around the world. Alternatively, tell us about your own doomed quest to find a decent cup of tea in Moscow.

Everybody hates us; we don't care.

Lol...
A Moroccan guy once informed me "you English are all the same... just racist".

He wasn't making a joke.

The Scottish Nationalists are my current favourites.
LET'S BE INDEPENDENT!

Why?

BECAUSE THE ENGLISH ARE BASTARDS!
(, Tue 29 Apr 2014, 11:51, closed)
Theres nothing quite like Nationalism,
to make a human look especially stupid.
(, Tue 29 Apr 2014, 11:55, closed)
Quite.

Has there ever been a time when the Scots didn't feel that way about the English?

(, Tue 29 Apr 2014, 11:56, closed)
The funniest thing about all the "Celts" is that they're less Celtic than the English.
Genetically speaking.

citation needed

I can dig it out if you want, but it'll take a while to find, prolly.
This isn't the original research I read, but it's related:
www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/magazine/mythsofbritishancestry/#.U1-HgvldWVE

The basic gist is this:
1) Celtic culture originated in the Basque country.
2) It spread more by word of mouth, than by migration of population.
3) In general, those who migrated tended to settle in England (as it was closer and easier to live in) than the more remote parts of the Islands.
4) After the Celts, England had invasions of Angles, Saxons, and Romans in smaller numbers, who did not actually contribute much genetically, but who did contribute a huge amount culturally.

So the point is, the English have more Celtic genetics, but less Celtic culture.

Whereas the "Celts" absorbed the culture which was not displaced by Anglo-Saxon or Roman culture, but their genetics are more similar to the tribes living on these islands before the Celts even turned up.

yeah ... do you have anything that hasn't been completely debunked?
Oppenheimer's book is broadly considered to be outright quackery and the only people I've heard refer to it recently are the BNP.
(, Tue 29 Apr 2014, 12:21, closed)
Well I have no interest in the BNP; Nationalists of all types are fucking idiots.
but I'm interested in anything which debunks that book.
(, Tue 29 Apr 2014, 12:30, closed)
Punching hard underneath the mattress ought to do it.

So you can demand citations, but won't reciprocate?
Fine cunt you are.

I have a Roman nose.
Therefore, I'm descended directly from Emperor Claudius.
(, Tue 29 Apr 2014, 13:08, closed)
more like Caligula's horse

(, Tue 29 Apr 2014, 13:13, closed)
A Roman nose...
...and a horses cock.
(, Tue 29 Apr 2014, 13:15, closed)
Hahahah, yeah right.
Will you be quoting Delaney next and saying that the Celts were all tall, blonde and blue-eyed?
(, Tue 29 Apr 2014, 13:16, closed)
I guess the point is,
that nobody knows who or what they're descended from, and everybody is related to some degree, so getting all angry about the consensual fiction of Nationalism is just absurd.
(, Tue 29 Apr 2014, 13:40, closed)
Fuck that noise.
KEEP BRITAIN NEANDERTHAL!
CRO-MAGNONS OUT!
(, Tue 29 Apr 2014, 14:08, closed)
Lol...
I find it particularly weird now that people own iPhones.

"I'm a Celt!"

"No you're fucking not... you're playing Angry Birds on a train... and you don't know the first thing about Bronze Age farming practices."
(, Tue 29 Apr 2014, 14:59, closed)
Hahahayeah. Like the scotch have feelings.

(, Tue 29 Apr 2014, 12:01, closed)
I think you will find that "Scotch" is an offensive way to describe the haggisniggers.

(, Tue 29 Apr 2014, 12:14, closed)
Only if you take offense at it.
If you don't take offense at it, it's not offensive.
Unfortunately the Scotch are professional takers of offense.
(, Tue 29 Apr 2014, 12:19, closed)
He hasn't even done the most basic research

(, Tue 29 Apr 2014, 12:33, closed)
I once read The Broons.

(, Tue 29 Apr 2014, 12:37, closed)
Yeah, but for a nation of violently drunk transvestite ginges, they're surprisingly easily offended.

(, Tue 29 Apr 2014, 13:19, closed)
How do you balance a Scot?

To think, people wonder just why independence looks like a good idea to some folk up here.
