I guess what I'm trying to say is
I would rather take a job as a toilet cleaner or something else just as menial than take up a post as a cold caller.

I think there's only a certain amount of times I could get told to 'fuck off' or have the phone slammed down on me before I'd walk out into the street and start strangling kittens on sight.

I didn't actually have that option.
I was tricked into cold calling by my agency. I had been actively searching for a job and was given that one. You're lucky you've not had to do it. They aren't all cunts, you know.

Ah but you see
I have been that cold calling monkey and while the work is shite the money (if you are any good at it) can be very very good. You develope a thick skin and prey on the weak. It is the Urban Jungle... no really it is...

OK it isnt it is a job for cunts,

Have you ever actually done that kind of physical menial work?
Yes, call centre work is grinding and soulless. But it beats being on benefit, it's indoors, sitting down, there's no heavy lifting, very little risk of personal injury, you can wear your own clothes without them getting wrecked, it doesn't leave you smelling funny, and when people ask what you do for a living it's technically true to say you "work in an office".

You leave the building at the end of your shift and leave your work there too, which is nice. After the fifth person has told you to 'fuck off' it has about as much psychological impact as 'good morning'.
