This is a question Common

Freddy Woo writes, "My wife thinks calling the front room a lounge is common. Worse, a friend of hers recently admonished her daughter for calling a toilet, a toilet. Lavatory darling. It's lavatory."

My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

What stuff do you think is common?

One thing marks you out as common
That is people who refer to themselves or sign their name with a courtesy title - i.e I am Mrs Smith. I was always taught that it was the same as shouting "Look at how important I think I am" and was therefore common. It's so engrained that it really bugs me when I get an email from people who have incorporated their title into their email signature and automatically makes me not want to help them.

Oh, that and using a fish knife.

I'm not sure I agree
Nothing wrong with wanting to be called "Mr Surname". I really object it when I go somewhere official, such as a bank, and they call me by my first name. I'm not their friend - I just want to be treated cooly and professionally...

Mr Jet Shoes esq.

I don't mean they shouldn't be used
but you should introduce yourself with your whole name (I'm John Doe) and they should call you Mr Doe.

Childhood conditioning is very hard to shake off :)
