My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

Starsky and Hutchwas always on the BBC actually, and if "that other one with a car and two men and a woman with breasts" is Dukes of Hazard, that was on the BBC too.
"In my day" ITV was not exactly banned, but very much discouraged and looked down upon (refered to as "dirty" - as a noun, not an adjective). In spite of rubbish such as on the buses, love thy neighbour, mind your language, ITV from the 70s looks positively classy compared to the dumbed-down shitfest which is ITV1 and 2 today.
