This is a question Conspicuous Consumption

Have you ever been photographed sat on a balcony eating a croissant; or wallowed in luxury just for the sake of it? What's the most ostentatious thing you ever seen or done?

I got a single ticket on theThe Underground
from Leicester Square to Covent Garden.

Are you questioning whether this qualifies?

It's a 300 yard journey. At £4.

Which gives it a cost per distance that would make the 3461 mile journey from London to New York cost £812,181.

So yeah, it qualifies.

Except you cant take a tube from London to NY. Nor can you walk. You cant take a plane or boat from Leicester Square to Covent Garden either. Therefore your oranges are apples.

......bit of pedantry there........

...yet...

Does this mean it outdoes the Heathrow Express
as the most expensive public transport per unit distance in Europe?
(, Mon 1 Aug 2011, 10:55, closed)
I haven't checked to make sure
but I believe it is the most expensive in the world.

I may have got that from QI though...

Doesn't mean it's wrong, if you did.

Certainly feels like it.
But the prospect of close to an hour in a packed tube carriage meant I ended up taking it.
Thing is, I'd do it again -- the tube's a filthy, cramped cattle car full of shit and it's worth the exorbitant price to get away from it.

I was standing with two lads on the platform at Covent Garden
The train was delayed by 10 minutes or so due to a signalling failure. When it did finally arive, they both piled on to the most cramped tube I've ever been on in my life, it was literally a sardine can.

Only to get of at Leiscter Square

What the christ

If you stand near the end of the platform,
You can hear people talking on the platform of the adjacent station (north Covent Garden, south Leicester Sq.)
(, Mon 1 Aug 2011, 13:09, closed)
Yep, you can see the lights..
..of the train when it stops at covent garden at lobster's queer station.
(, Mon 1 Aug 2011, 13:25, closed)
fair play
but why didn't you walk? It's about three minutes away and you get to go past the Chandos.
(, Mon 1 Aug 2011, 16:54, closed)
Genuinely
because I had heard it was the most expensive journey in the world so I wanted to do it.

I realise that makes me quite a sad individual.

What's the base fare of a London taxi these days?
Would a taxi from Leicester Square to Covent Garden cost more than £4?
(, Mon 1 Aug 2011, 19:23, closed)
If you could get a cab
from the actual point that the trains run to and from it would be cheaper. If you could actually persuade the driver to take you those 300 yards at all that is.
(, Mon 1 Aug 2011, 20:04, closed)
Ah the Chandos...
...is just 200 yards from where I work.

Quality, I think we had a bash there a while back.

I need to try this with my oh so heavily discounted Oyster card next time I am in London. Will probably cost me 20p
