When you're young you think it's cool running around in the middle of the night
So me and my mates used to head off into various locations around town at 3-4AM over the summer. One location was a local school nearby that had a lot of land, it was dark and had lots of cool stuff just left on the sports field from the week before. We used to go high jumping, or pole vaulting in the dead of night etc or stack the crash mats up high and jump off the roof of the neighboring building.

However, past the sports fields was another unused bit of land which was off limits to pupils because of a nearby river. We headed down there one night. I remember it was a perfectly clear night in July, and really, really warm. So we lay down on the cool grass listening to the relaxing noise of the river gently streaming over some rocks. We then heard some footsteps, like hooves. This didn't alarm us as we lived in a small town and farmland was on the other side of the river, it was probably just some cows or a horse. We lay there staring up at the sky, on this night you could see the dust belt arm of the galaxy, and we gazed up without a care in the world when suddenly from the darkness on the other side of the river:

MARRONGGGGGGGGGGGGGGAROOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUGGGGHHHHHHHNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGggggghhhnnnnnn......gnnnnnn............uuuurrrrgggg..............*gargle*................*thud*

*loud splashing noise in the river*

The splashing got closer and the blood curdling scream started up again and started to get even closer. It sounded like some poor animal being killed. We didn't stick around to find out what it was, at least one millisecond into the scream I was on my feet, had grabbed my jacket and was sprinting away with my heart pounding. I looked behind me and couldn't see anyone, when I turned my head around my mates had over taken me and were speeding away faster than me.

We never did work out what it was, probably some poor cow or horse that we had scared and was just defending itself on instinct but it was the first time I felt sheer terror and it still makes shivers run up my spine today.
