An introduction to Resident Evil
so there it is - it's 1997, and I've just been introduced (a bit late, I know, but I'd never been convinced of consoles prior to that) to the wonders of the Sony Playstation.

now, I'm among game fans here I know, and even non-gamers must have heard of RE by now, but back then I was an innocent... I'd heard vague rumblings and seen the odd advert in gaming mags, but not much beyond that.

so... I happen by the dodgy console shop near my parents one morning, and see a second hand copy for not much... so I grab it. head off to work, and I'm htere till about 2am. get in, have a bath, and then think I'll have a go on my new game... in the dark.

I lasted about fifteen minutes. then I had to sit up till daytime with all the lights in every room on till I was able to go back to sleep.

I'm such a scaredy cat. :(

my mate was the same
she didn't sleep properly for a week.
i played it for about 5 minutes, got killed, threw the joypad on the floor and gave up.
i like the film, though

Silent Hill
Nah man you're not a scardey-cat at all... I did the same thing playing Silent Hill alone in my room at night and on top of nearly shitting my pants, I didn't sleep for about a week. Those silly 32-or-however-many-bit they were games were goddamn terrifying!

YES!
I had to take that fucking game back, couldn't finish it....nobody understands how disturbing that game was. Nobody knows man, nobody. They weren't there....THEY WEREN'T THERE!!

like the creaking doors in RE
the crackling radio in SH... instant heeby jeebies.

like a twat, I did exactly the same thing with the original The Ring... decided to watch it at 3am in the dark... then it was up all night again till it got light enough to go to bed.

Resident Evil.....
...and Silent Hill, for that matter, are for kiddies. In both cases, you're heavily armed and more than a match for whats lying in wait. In R.E. you invariably turn out to be some kinda superhuman.

Doom III is similar, although at the end I found myself having to deal with the suspense by yelling "Come on you bastards, is that all you've got!" at the screen whilst chambering my last shotgun round.

F.E.A.R. - again, you've got guns, but they are master of suspense those buggers.. made all the hair (not that much these days) on my head stand on end. Again with the yelling at the screen....

But, if you think you are hardcore horror survivalists because you've played some of all of these games I dare you to try the ultimate fear experience...

Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the Earth.

....They don't give you a gun until halfway through the game and they KNOW fear.

good luck. It's dark in there.

This.
I think call of Cthulhu was just about the only game to actually cause a genuine fear response in me. When those fishman bastards chase you through your hotel - so intense.

Scary!
I played the original and loved it and also bought the remake for the GC and that is just as bad.

Anyone wanting to see a game that really fucks with your head should try Eternal Darkness. Any game that starts pretending to turn the TV volume down by itself, screwing with the picture quality or pretending to switch the TV off gets my vote for scary.

I
wasn't too bad with RE, but Silent Hill scared the shit out of me, and then I was too pussy to buy the other installments. I wanted to but I was too scared >_<
