This is a question Desperate Times

Stranded in a hotel in an African war zone with no internet access for two weeks, I was forced to resort to desperate measures. Possessing only my passport and the clothes I stood up in; and the warning "You can catch it shaking hands with a vicar out there" ringing in my ears, I had to draw my own porn in order to preserve my sanity.

Alas, it all came out looking like Coronation Street's Audrey Roberts, but, as they say, any port in a storm.

What have you done in times of great desperation?

Another (true, this time) car one.
Once I ran out of diesel, about 5 miles from the nearest fuel station. Well, I knew that my old diesel car would burn pretty much any kind of thick oil, so I shoved in a gallon of used engine oil I had in the back, mixed it with a bit of petrol that I carry around for generators etc, and believe it or not the car started and got me to the petrol station (albeit running rather rough).

I bet your car is your pride and joy ;o)
still - probably better for it than Redex etc.

It was never the same again afterwards...
but I'm sure a service would have sorted it out. Unfortunately it eventually succumbed to rust and poor build quality like most Vauxhalls.

I've also been known to use a bottle of cooking oil to get me off the motorway in a fix, but I'm sure that's not nearly as bad for it.

cooking oil
My citroen runs perfectly on up to about 80% cooking oil with no ill effects apart from a slightly "deep-fried" smell from the exhaust.
buying in bulk works out at about 65p per litre as opposed to a quid a litre for real diesel.

alternative fuels
I used to run my Citroën CX on waste veg oil, among other things. Dave Likes Cheese - if you've got one of the Citroëns with hydraulic suspension, they run perfectly well on waste LHM. Now's the time to offer to change the fluid in every Xantia you see for cost price...
