If only there were a way to avoid this sort of person...Like eyes, or preparation so you don't have to buy smokes at that time.
Why not preempt their desperate attempt to break their increasing loneliness and talk to them in the queue... Placing your items with theirs and getting them to pay for your shit. You can always help them with their shopping before either mugging them or simply blaming their senile ways when you wander off with their stuff. Probably still nicer than tutting impatiently.
