As I've mentioned before, I'm generally anti-religious
but I think there's a case to be made - a guy I knew at school was really fucked up due to his girlfriend's suicide, and became this crazy, violent psychopath with a penchant for knives and self-harm. Bumped into him a few years later and he was the most amiable, sociable guy you could imagine. Admittedly he was trying to raise funds in the town centre for his next missionary trip to Africa, but at least he wasn't dead or in prison, which is where I feared he'd end up.

I think the point is, though, that if any group of well-meaning people had looked after him for a number of years and tried to help him through the bad times it would have had the same result. The fact that it was a church that stepped in and saved him saddens me a bit, but at least they did help him.

^^Reminds me of an excellent Cheech and Chong sketch:
"I used to be all fucked up on drugs. Now I'm all fucked up on the Lord."

Yup, some Christians're bastards for that,
saving people who're beyond reasonable help, seeing the good in scary people nobody else wants.
That's what Jesus himself was up to - tolerance, humility, generosity.
