This is a question Pathological Liars

Friz writes, "I recently busted my mate who claimed to have 'supported the Kaiser Chiefs in 2001' by gently mentioning that they weren't even called that back then."

Some people seem to lead complete fantasy lives with lies stacked on lies stacked on more lies. Tell us about the ones you've met.

BTW, if any of you want to admit to making up all your QOTW stories, now would be a good time to do it.

Fatal Duvet Error
My ex-flatmate and general aasistant party goer (who shall remain nameless) had the annoying habit of always lying for pure one-up-man-ship.
A couple of years ago we were talking about going camping and mentioned arctic slepping bags and the like. At this point my mate said he had a duvet that was so warm it was 100g/cm2.
He was most upset when I pointed out that would make a standard double duvet 4 metric ton.
Length? it nearly crushed him

Ah
Yes, well I actually had one of those when I led an expedition into the Arctic to look at penguin problems.

The penguins face terrible, terrible problems with the polar bears you know.

Well, actually it's the polar bears who have the problems with the penguins.

they can't get the wrappers off

Hmm..
I like this (click), but by Christ, how geeky are you for knowing that?
(, Wed 5 Dec 2007, 13:28, closed)
It's easily worked out
Just calculate the area of the duvet by multiplying its length by its breadth (in cm) and multiply by 100. Then divide by a million to get the result in tonnes.

The fact that 100g/cm2 is more than four times the density of the heaviest known element, osmium (or iridium depending on who you ask), does consign such a duvet to the realms of science fiction though!

Geek? Moi?

Oh my god
there's two of them!

How do you know these things? And why?
(, Wed 5 Dec 2007, 14:04, closed)
I'm a scientist
It's my job to know crap like that.

I usually fail miserably when watching Who Wants to be a Millionaire because I don't know who plays Jimmy in Emmerdale or something, even though 99.9999% of the population do.

Fair point K2k6
If you ever need to know the really nitty gritty details of pensions and the finance acts that apply ......... I'm your girl! Science I don't do (well I do have 2 science O Grades which dates me slightly) and I'm not much on soap opera trivia!

Yes, I've got O Grades too. The very last year of them before Standard grades came in. Work that one out for yourself.

And you've just reminded me that I need to get back to my accountant about my income tax return.

AArgh. Geek error
100g/cm2 is not a measure of density. That would depend how thick it is.
Density is a cube not a square.

Ha! (and other monosyllabic expressions of arrogance)

True soldinio
I believe it could be called 'area density' and be used in the manner described above to calculate the mass, in a similar manner to using sheet resistance for thin films. However, I admit to my mistake in the reply above when discussing osmium.

It's a fair cop, guv.

We must be about the same age!! I can't let you be the only geek in that case (us oldies have to stick together) - I can do my own tax returns, piece of cake.

While I agree we 30-somethings should stick together - less of the old if you please! I admit that I'm now of an age such that I understand the meaning of 'wisdom', but I'm low mileage!

I could probably do my own tax returns too if I had the time and inclination, but reckon the money is well spent getting it done properly by a professional. The cost is probably offset by the amount she can save me and my peace of mind. You're fortunate to have the ability and confidence to do yours!
(, Wed 5 Dec 2007, 15:01, closed)
I agree about the 30 somethings
and I wish somebody would return my tax!

Wisdom with advancing tears I mean years.
