This is a question Advice from Old People

Sometimes, just sometimes, old people say something worth listening to. Ok, so it's like picking the needle out of a whole haystack of mis-remembered war stories, but those gems should be celebrated.

Tell us something worthwhile an old-type person has told you.

Note, we're leaving the definition of old up to you, you smooth-skinned youngsters.

Public Information Advice
1. Always take care when turning over in bed at night.

2. Don't jump to conclusions when you get back and chest pains.

3. Keep calm when you experience some numbness in your fingers.

4. Don't believe the NHS Direct website - it's not a human being and can only give general advice.

5. Always remember to rein in your feelings of gratitude when you discover you have simply pulled a muscle and you're not suffering the longest heart-attack known to mankind.

Hugs and kisses are not always appreciated by nursing staff - a smile and a thank you are sufficient.

@ TRL
See? This is why we're well suited - we both have a habit of behaving inappropriately.

We're well meaning...but just wrong sometimes.

My husband's workmate
claims to have had the only heart attack ever cured by Rennies.

His red-faced moment also involved a call to 999 and some blue flashing lights. Oops.

Re 1. I pulled a muscle in my back turning over in bed and thought I'd slipped a disc at the very least. It was agony.

Yep
It *is* agony.

Apparently it's an intercostal muscle that I've pulled.
In bed.

I climb. I mountain bike. I garden.

And I pull a muscle turning over in bed.

Oh...and to add insult to injury, I was alone in bed!

@TWW
turning over in bed polishing mr witch the burly builders helmet whilst dressed in a two pience swimming costume, a wedding ring and factor 30 sun cream.

Ooooh intercostal.
The ones between the ribs, yeah?

I knackered the big muckle thing running up the side of the spine. And walked squint for some days because it hurt less that way. I looked like a mong! (Well, more than usual)

Even two years later I get the odd twinge. Coughing and sneezing together are a very bad combination!

edit: al, sadly no. The big swine didn't even hear my pathetic yelps of pain. I had to wake him at 8 to phone the doctor's surgery.

Sympathy click
I had a 6 month period of getting really bad heartburn a while back. One attack was so bad that Tourettes had to get the paramedics out.

At 3am in the morning. Not fun.

*longs for a pie but knows that they make me poorly*

@TWW
I did that this morning - sneezed hard, and came round on the floor. couldn't move for an hour :-(
The woman in Boots didn't believe anyone could damage their back sneezing, but she also told me it was a shame Bush would soon leave the White house.
I'm now drugged up to the eyeballs and have a hot water bottle strapped to my back, yay!
(, Wed 25 Jun 2008, 21:25, closed)
Ouch, I've done that
turned out to be a trapped nerve, but I thought I was dying at the time. Have a click of sympathy
(, Wed 25 Jun 2008, 21:55, closed)
hmm
I broke two ribs falling out of a shower, that wasn't fun.

*wanders off again*

Some More Public Information Advice
My mate had a bit 'indegestion' one afternoon, mentioned it a couple of times, but didn't want to cause a fuss or anything.

Dead by the next morning.

Do make some assumptions and get yourself seen, would be my advice.
