This is a question Social Networking Gaffes

Freddy Woo writes, "My school bully just friended me on Facebook!" No doubt he pokes him, and then demands his lunch money.

Personally, last month a scantily clad young woman confused me with her fiance, with whom I share a first and last name. I'm still not sure she's noticed, but she's going to be mortified when she does.

What's the biggest mistake you've made using a social networking site?

My Gaff?
I blocked Facebook at work yesterday, as despite many warnings some members of my team are constantly playing on the games (cricket and bowling seem to be popular) or chatting with others, and the quality of work is suffering.

So far I've had to deal with two verbal and three written (e-mailed to me) complaints from those who think it's unfair. Luckily my manager is behind me on this, so I can ignore them, tell them to quit whining and get back to work.

Who'd have thought such a little thing could provoke so much whining? This is work, surely people can go 8 hours without seeing exactly that their mates are eating? But it seems that I am now the leading hate figure in the office and will be for some time.

So, like social networking sites themselves, this post has no point. But that's definatly my social networking gaff,

Work Computer policy
I too did this with a Net Admin, we blocked it in both our sites. In the end someone raised a call through the helpdesk, and it escalated to us being told off for blocking it without getting the proper authorisation first, and then having to open it back up. Our firm has a social group and our users "use it to keep in touch", as if email, telephone and instant messaging isnt good enough.

It has also been blocked from my work
I work for the NHS. They also blocked eBay, Myspace, Youtube... anything fun!
Apparently the huge bandwidth it uses with thousands of staff using it every day was impacting on patient care.
Pah! Like the patients dont get enough attention already!

Hah
When the sites* I visited got blocked from the work servers I just used to Radmin into the web server and surf from there.

*Transformers-related, mostly. And b3ta, of course.
