This is a question Social Networking Gaffes

Freddy Woo writes, "My school bully just friended me on Facebook!" No doubt he pokes him, and then demands his lunch money.

Personally, last month a scantily clad young woman confused me with her fiance, with whom I share a first and last name. I'm still not sure she's noticed, but she's going to be mortified when she does.

What's the biggest mistake you've made using a social networking site?

I'm not convinced this is a gaff, but here goes
I wrote a scathing review of my former place of work at www.anoniwork.com

Every word of it was true, and several former colleagues have written simillar. My former employers are now threatening to sue me for "slander".

Yes, I know that it's libel if it's in print. They don't. That should tell you the intellectual calibre of the people I had to deal with. Frivolous and groundless legal threats from someone with a BA in Leisure and Tourism are always fun when you have an LLB yourself.

Rather than contacting me or any of my colleagues, they posted this thread on anoniwork.com itself. In a sense, then, they're the ones who have committed the gaffe.

Actually
a great many lawyers agree that what's written on the internet actually amounts to slander not libel, because it is conversational. Your LLB is worth cock all matey

You learn something new every day
(can I go home now?)

Just as many lawyers disagree with that too.
If she's right, then she's right by accident. Did you miss the bit where I said that the threats they were making were posted on the site itself, rather than communicated to me directly?

Of course, none of this changes the fact that it has to be factually inaccurate to be either libel or slander.

surely
it's in the public interest - people might be wondering whether to apply for a job there.

And if it's true (or opinion), then you won't have anything to worry about?

I'm not worried in the slightest.
I forgot to mention that one of the management there wrote an insulting post about me that containted things that were factually untrue as well as my full name and home address. That hardly does them any favours.

I also forgot to mention that I resigned (and have email correspondence proving that I resigned and gave notice) and yet they still feel able to to tell people that they sacked me. Now I'm pretty sure that really does constitute slander.
