This is a question Amazing displays of ignorance

Sandettie Light Vessel Automatic tells us: "My dad's friend told us there's no such thing as gravity - it's just the weight of air holding us down". Tell us of times you've been floored by abject stupidity. "Whenever I read the Daily Express" is not a valid answer.

... have to admit until I read your post, I would agree with the motorway system one. hhmmm. Google search time for me.

Nope
The motorway numbers generally follow the A roads they replace or relieve. Hence the M1 generally weaves around the A1, M6 A6... I could go on but you get the picture.

So what system was used to number the A roads?

The roads are numbered
in accordance to sectors in the UK fanning out from London.
