This is a question Tightwads

There's saving money, and there's being tight: saving money at the expense of other people, or simply for the miserly hell of it.

Tell us about measures that go beyond simple belt tightening into the realms of Mr Scrooge.

10p !!!
The bus company I work for ,do not give change for fares,(the money goes into a sealed vault). If for any reason a customer had no change we could give them a voucher, which can be changed at our offices.
When a voucher is asked for we have to fill it out in duplicate..A young fella got on my bus and wanted 90p fare offered a pound coin and asked for a 10p change reciept, when I asked him if he was serious he gave said he wont bother...If he did insist I would have given tight fucker the 10p out of my own pocket.

I don't know
I think it's fair enough to ask for your 10p change. It's a disgrace that people have to go all the way through an idiotic beaurocratic system to get the small change they get.

Of course, very crafty from the company: most people don't give a fuck, and the "lost" change adds up significantly.

My local bus company does the same.
Is it because they don't trust the bus drivers?
Or is it because they set the standard fair at £1:70 (ffs) and expect no one will bother to cash in the 30p change from 2 pound coins?
(, Wed 29 Oct 2008, 22:36, closed)
that's exactly what they're hoping.
there's no other reasonable explanation.

Bus drivers
many years ago I used to get the bus into work every day. One day, about two years into my bus usage I realised I'd forgotten to get any cash. I had to scrape through the coppers collection to get 76p in 2 pence pieces.

When the bus arrived I apologised "I'm really sorry, this is all I've got this morning..."

"I can't take that"

"It's all I have, I'm very sorry..."

"I can't take it, It's not legal"

"Come on, you could take it, it's just a few coppers, I need to get to work"

At which point the muthafucker grabbed a handful of coins and threw them out of the bus door.

I took my seat and refused to budge until the fucker took me to work.

They really are miserable cunts though aren't they.

jesus, bus drivers are cunts.
give them their fucking change.
it's not unreasonable to want due change - the young fella who got on your bus is not the tightwad, your company is.

If you're on Income Support and surviving on less than fifty quid a week
then ten pence on each journey makes a difference.

And it's HIS ten pence, not the bus company's.

I think as a bus company employee you should fill out a voucher for everyone who doesn't have the correct change and make it a complete bureaucratic nightmare for the bus company. Then it might work out cheaper for them to give customers their change rather than keep the unearned income for themselves.

But you call your customer a tight fucker. If you saw 10p lying on the ground, would you pick it up? If yes, doesn't that make you as "cheap" as him?

^ This
But also it doesn't matter if you're on income support, poor or whatever.

It's your change, not theirs.

When you're 10p short of the fare, they don't let you on.

I'd take my 10p receipt
everytime.

In fact, knowing me, I'd probably make a habit of handing over a pound coin just so I could do so.

Its the principle, not the money.
(, Thu 30 Oct 2008, 9:10, closed)
then
save up the 10p receipts and every 9th ride you get one free!

In Dublin, they give you change tickets
as Dublin Bus claim they have been robbed so many times, they just cant afford to keep change on the bus. This is obviously bullshit as people still have to pay, using you guessed it...money!

You can redeem your tickets in their one and only office in Dublin's city centre during office hours. Most people give them to charity.

I hoard them until the opportunity presents itself and usually make a pretty good haul.

I'm not tight though - it's my money.

And profligacy is expensive.

Heaven forbid he should want his money instead of being screwed over by a bunch of cunts.

I'm with Scarpe on this one...
The bus company must make a ruddy mint out of all those "lost" 10p pieces.

This is a maths/economics thing that has been floating around in a much more disguised version for years and it was highlighted in the Superman III film when Richard Prior asks "Where do all of the fractions of one Cent go" (or words to that effect) then writes some software to "Harvest" them.

You'll notice the same thing with fuel prices (and many other examples). They state something like 104.26p per litre. The .26p gets rounded up as we don't have a half-penny any more and the retailer gets the difference (0.24p). 0.24p is a tiny amount and nobody would worry about missing it but when one million people fill up with 20 litres of fuel that's 20 * 0.24 (4.8p) * 1,000,000 which is £480,000 (yes, four hundred and eighty thousand pounds).

They must think that we're effing stupid and it sounds like they've duped you into carrying out their little scheme. I would guess that the local authority has set/capped bus fares and this is the way that the bus company make their "little extra" (by installing the sealed boxes).

ALWAYS take the change. And smash a window on the way out...

I've had similar experiences with bus drivers

For example - One time I wanted a £0.90 fare/journey and offered paymnet via a £5 note. The bus-driver said that he didn't have any change and that I'd have to get off and wait for the next bus.
Please bear in mind that buses are no longer `exact fare only' and also that I had to be at work in 15 minutes!!!
Bus driver wasn't budging so we had cross words for a while before I got off. I was tempted just to sit down but he was such a twat I had a feeling that he wouldn't stop to let me off when I got to my designated stop.
This has happened on a handful of times and is totally unneccessary. To me the bus-driver is not doing his job properbly by having inadequate change and he is not accepting perfectly legal tender from a PAYING customer.
TWUNTS!!!

Glad I've got my car now :O)

A few months ago
I had to use a £10 note to get a £3 ticket. I was very apologetic handing it over, but he still proceeded to roll his eyes and huff and puff and curse and swear under his breath as he fumbled around for the change.

When I sat down I realised he'd given me two £5 notes instead of one. HA HA. If he hadn't been such a rude grumpy old shite I might have given one back. Why do they do the job if they hate people so much? Go and drive a fucking lorry or something instead.

note: they're not ALL cunts, it brightens up my day when I get a nice cheery one.
(, Thu 30 Oct 2008, 11:51, closed)
You should
think yourself lucky you don't get on buses in Birmingham - none of them give change and you can't even get a note to cash in at their offices like in the OP.

Hence on the odd occasion I do get the bus, I've taken to counting out most of my fare in coppers or 5ps. Effectively being a bit of a tightwad, but when I think of all the times they've made profit out of me because I've paid more than the exact fare then I'd say we're about even.
(, Thu 30 Oct 2008, 11:10, closed)
The last time I was in Nottingham they were all exact fare only
Everyone knew this. There's no problem.

However, if the bus co. are claiming they aren't exact fare only and are making it any more difficult for the customer to claim their change then they are cunts and whoever came up with the idea and doesn't deserve fingers. And anyone who thinks its ok is a dog's cunt.

The customer was doing the right thing - if someone's trying to rip you off with inconvenience then inconvenience them until it costs them more than doing the decent thing.

I'm off to calm down now
