Books!
I have a large collection of Jack Vance books that would be nearly impossible to replace, including his really obscure murder mysteries.

I'd grab those before I bothered with my guitars.

Aaaah books
I have some favourites I've read over and over, but too many to save in a fire. Maybe just the Diana Gabaldon books then, cos I just love them!

Dunno if I could just choose some of my books!

I mean, if I took Tintin I couldn't leave Asterix... and if I took Tom Holt but left Terry Pratchett I think I'd break down and cry!

Could I leave The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear? Or what of The Satanic Verses? Could I live with myself for committing The Lord of the Rings, Metamorphosis or Sleepers to the fire?

I'd leave The Da Vinci Code though. That can fuck right off.

But none of them are non-replaceable.

Most of my books
I would let burn, as I can replace them- but have you ever tried to find a copy of "The Houses of Ism" or "Chateau D'If"? Jack Vance is mostly out of print and damned hard to find. My collection has taken me years to assemble.

Larry Niven can be replaced, as can "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" and the Tao Te Ching and all of my Robert McCammon books. But Vance I would brave the flames to save.

The only book that I'd hate to lose
would be whichever one I was reading at the time.

I hate it when I lose my page and have to faff about trying to find where I'd got to.

I'd definitely try to save
my first edition of Oscar Wilde's Salome. I'd be seriously pissed off if that was burnt.

Of the rest of my books, my fiance and I would first make sure the cats were safe and then spend any remaining time arguing about which books would be saved, and both die on our 14th trip into the house with comics, graphic novels and books of all kinds scattered everywhere.
But you are right DiT, I wouldn't even think of taking The Da Vinci Code, I'd take special pleasure in watching it burn.
