My Great-Uncle left me his visitors book which along with boring people like the Queen and Harold Wilson has Spike Milligan's signature in it. It's all loopy.

I'm going to sound like an utter cunt but...It's "were" and not "where", and it's a person's own choice what things they choose to do in life, not the fault of the dangerous thing they've picked.
