Early Collins-erawas very much a continuation of the Gabriel era - A Trick of the Tail is as good a prog album as any other. A lot of the 80s stuff is shite, though*, you're right. Having said that, there are some great songs in there - Mama is just brilliant and--yes, shoot me--Invisible Touch is a great pop song.
If you want to hear a baaaaaaad Genesis album, listen to what happened when Collins left.
