Carrots
are orange because the Dutch did a lot of the experimentation with carrot breeding in the 16th c. This resulted in fantasticly productive plants with the carrots coming in a fetching patriotic orange colour. Carrots can come in a whole variety of colours, but the orange one just caught on early.
