[challenge entry] I missed Tommy Lee Jones's birthday this morning...
So have this fluffy now instead...

* OK smart arse, where would you put the apostrophe to refer to his birthday?

# Tommy Lee Jones's is okay
although some would use Tommy Lee Jones'.

Ordinarily I would use the latter, the former is only useful where there might be a plural (as in lots of TLJs having their birthday).

# But his name is Jones (singular) so you would need another 's'?

This reminds me of a conversation I once had with a landlord who said his pub was called "The Red Lion".
I was trying to convince him that it was just called "Red Lion" otherwise I would have to ask my mates if they were going to the The Red Lion tonight.

* It doesn;t really matter, as I was very, very drunk at the time.

# jones's is correct
(, Thu 15 Sep 2011, 13:34, archived)
# I
cant keep up with this
(, Thu 15 Sep 2011, 13:38, archived)
# But surly it should have a capital 'J'

* Yes I know... You want me to stop calling you Shirley

# Anyway, if I put that, it would read ""Jones is Birthday"
Should it not be "Joness' Birthday"?
(, Thu 15 Sep 2011, 13:51, archived)
# no, what you said originally is correct
i was agreeing with you
(, Thu 15 Sep 2011, 14:47, archived)
# The convention is that you add the extra s for names of 1 or 2 syllables
but skip it for 3 or more

(, Thu 15 Sep 2011, 14:21, archived)
# So I wouldn't need to add the additinal 's' if I was refering to Roger More' Birthday?
(I'm a bit confused now)
(, Thu 15 Sep 2011, 14:30, archived)
# well, no
because roger moore is spelt with two "OO"s
(, Thu 15 Sep 2011, 14:46, archived)
# I'm only referring to names that already end in an 's'
So you would add it for any names that doesn't end in an 's'
Roger Moore's
Arnold Schwarzenegger's
Jesus's
Angelos Papadopoulos'
(, Thu 15 Sep 2011, 15:00, archived)
# But that still means "Roger Moore is Birthday"
Oh I don't understand... Is it nearly Bear Tiem yet?
(, Thu 15 Sep 2011, 15:15, archived)
# gaz'd
(, Thu 15 Sep 2011, 16:52, archived)
# No, you would not.
You can use one and Jones's is correct, but Jones' is also correct.
(, Thu 15 Sep 2011, 14:25, archived)
# i believe Jones' is accepted, rather than correct
