I remember what led up to it too -- one individual who at the time sought to impose their preferences on everyone who uses this website and who felt completely justified in doing so. A very similar situation exists right now.
The person you're referring to has mellowed considerably, at least as far as their comments on /board are concerned, and surprise surpise, the spack gifs are pretty much a thing of the past. That's Newton's Third Law of Messageboards in action right there.
