# yes, of course :)
whats the issue?

# Well [as you probably know]
RH8 comes with apache 2.something and php 4.2.2 as rpms. Am I better off ignoring those [not installing those packages] and then downloading each one of their respective sites and installing them like that, or using these RPMs?

I only ask because I got the version of apache which came with RH working..but adding php support is proving tricky [because the instructions I'm following don't use the same paths as the default RH8 apache does]

# it depends.
only worth upgrading if there is a major bug fix
in apache or php

also, have a look at www.rime.com.au/gd/
where you can get a version of php/gd with gif support :)

# I think I'll just ignore the RPMs
Do apache/php etc from scratch, so I can follow intructions to the T.

Thanks :)
