Before that....England had the St George cross, Scotland had the St Andrews Saltire. In fact these countries still use those flags till this day.

my history of the union jack is largely false.bob's right, it was just the king's flag (and so used by the royal navy), later adopted by the country.
i would imagine that before they were british, the english navy would just have used the flag of saint george.
