depends what your after.I used to go there a fair bit when I lived in the dam (to the bar mainly, and occasionally the coffeeshop). If you want a small place, right in the heart of the city and close to loads of stuff, but smelly and surrounded by porn and drugs, stay there. Best hostel my mates stayed in was the flying pig on nieuwendijk. Just as central as greenhouse, but a little quieter. When in amsterdam, avoid the grasshopper and the bulldog coffeeshops, they are purely there to rip off american tourists. Go to the dampkring (off the spui), Cafe de Kuil (just off nieuwndijk, towards Centraal station), and if you miss english food and a pint that has a normal head, go to the Tara on the Rokin.
