what's the point of png?
I get gifs and jpegs, and swap between the two when I need to, but any png I make is gargantic no matter what type o image I'm makin..

PNGs happened to be smaller than the corresponding GIFs.

png is best suited to vectors
they go all huge when you add photos to them

GIF format
really didn't like the gradient at the top of the 2nd image. PNG lapped it up.

but it can do 256-colour palette mode as well. It seemed to also be slightly smaller for the first image.
