Have you thought of investing in a strong lamp? You could keep the filesize right down, and thus make longer animations, if the light level didn't change from frame to frame.

it's good advice.

I bought a bunch of 'work lamps' from the local DIY stuporstore. They're just a metal hood attached to a movable clip. They were about $7 each, I doubt they'd be any more expensive in the UK. Then for the bulbs, GE's incandescents are cheap and are designed specifically for indoor photo/video. You get about 20 hours from them, and given that you only need to turn them on for very short bursts, they last ages. This combo is a very cheap option and it really works well.
