is people believing they have to live up to this unattainable image of the 'perfect relationship'.
we learn about romantic love from representations in the media, and then using these stories as a framework, go on to judge real life experiences inevitably finding these paltry by comparison.
the best explanation i can offer is to read book IV of de rerum natura by lucretius.

men don't do things like that.
they don't make you feel like you are the most important person in the world to them, then leave their bad marriage for someone who isn't you, and when you try to cut off contact, tell you "it's only the psychos in this world that are keeping us apart," so you try to keep in touch, and eight years later you still haven't heard from them.
