in that case, i think it was a queenyou should check outside, there might be a nest.
get an old pair of tights, some cheese, a tuning fork and small piece of haddock. put the tights over your head to protect your face (they mustn't know it's you). Hit the tuning fork (a b will do fine). when you see them coming, rest the ladder up at someone elses window - throw the haddock to the top of the ladder and they should go after it, into someone elses house. There they will make a new nest and leave you in peace. Take the cheese, put it in a sandwich, and have a rest and a snack. you'll need it.

I dunno......I would sleep uneasy knowing that those things could be next door! They have sharp teeth! I know they would chew there way back behind the bread tin. I already have markings there from a previous attack of adam ants.
