What did you use to save your gifs? There appears to be quite a lot of difference between the frames which scuppers optimisation. What you can do is save the gif in whatever you saved it in and then edit just the changing part (i.e. the eyes in this case) in Paint because then you always get the same background with no loss and the filesize will be lower

That's what I did
but the filesize was absoutely massive, so I copped out and used GIMP's auto-optimise animation feature over the weekend. Which introduced all the weird shit in the frames. So I'm doing something wrong somewhere.
