I know that it would be grammatically correct to say "Metallica is awesome", but it still sounds wrong.
It's not like "at the end of the show, Jack's team have seven points", which always makes my teeth itch. Jack's team
has seven points, you fool.

Hooray for grammatical correctness
But I've ben drinking now, so I'm wondering if band names are collective nouns and thus treated as plurals, e.g.: sheep are excellent. Take 'The Strokes' for example; "The Strokes is awesome," sounds just plain wrong. Or does it depend on whether the name itself implies a plural?
I'm with you on the team thing though - there is only one team.
