Probably.
My girlfriend used to live basically next to Edgbaston cricket ground, which I wouldn't really recommend. My sister lives down near to Cotteridge, which is nice enough but a bit further away.
There's a decent trainline through the university if you want to look further afield, but I'm not sure what it's like at peak times.
If you look near Bourneville, bear in mind that they don't allow any late opening off licenses or take aways, apparently. This could be devastating for a student.
Selly oak's the traditional studenty area though, my brother lived there through his degree and seemed to be alright.
