to be fair
they wouldn't annoy me so much if they'd just accept that certain words should have a u in them.

Their version of aluminium is more accurate to the original than ours.
Also use of the word "fall" for autumn is far older and more "English" than, well, "autumn".
I expect the ancient Romans, Germans, French, Angles and Saxons are all turning in their graves every time they hear some chav say "innit" or a business person use the term "idea shower", or, indeed, any one of us talk or express theirselves, because of our bastardization of the language.
