Spitz Strikes Back Part V presents...

THE VOODOO TROMBONE QUARTET

+ TUNER featuring TERRY EDWARDS (NICK CAVE, PJ HARVEY, GALLON DRUNK)

+ THE SWEET CHAP

+ DJ NEOTROPIC (FUTURE SOUND OF LONDON)

Thurs 10 April 08:

Voodoo Trombone Quartet is the infectious and irresistible sound of drum'n'brass, with the emphasis on brass, brass and more cheek popping brass. Paul Thorpe, the man behind VTQ, was previously with a succession of chart topping, Peel session recording bands. The Spitz welcomes this kicking 8-piece orchestra with our collective arms. They throw down ska, break-beat, surf, voodoo-electro and speed-lounge to scintillating effect. Fresh from a series of notorious live appearances at Lost Vagueness, Glastonbury and Bestival, VTQ are a cult-gathering outfit who will cap the night off like a Cadillac on fire.

Tuner play punk-lounge, ska-funk and jazz - though, perhaps you'll be glad to know, - never jazz-funk. Inspired by Chris Salmon, the guitar wielding maestro of Stump, Tuner pull together a host of different genres and blend them admirably. Alongside Peter Stephens and Michael Levison of 80's punk act Spit Like Paint, Salmon has found a band that has created a new genre - forward-looking retro. Ably supported by multi-instrumentalist Steve Wilson and Glyn Owen, drummer with The Mike Flowers Pops, Tuner perform songs that sometimes sound like every band you've ever heard (but without their singers) - and the soundtrack to the best AND worst film you have ever seen. With their music played on proper vintage instruments, you'd be forgiven for thinking you'd got this pigeon holed, but bearing in mind Tuner have performed live with Can's Damo Suzuki, saw player Ruby Wright, and the serially ubiquitous brass player Terry Edwards, then you know you have to scratch deeper. The new Tuner album is released on Terry Edwards' Sartorial label and will be launched exclusively as part of this evening's proceedings. Most exciting!

DJ Neotropic is Council Folk Recordings artiste and Future Sound of London veteran Riz Maslen on the decks. Riz is one of the few female electro gurus in the U.K. but her sets take in all genres; from Tom Waits to Silver Mount Zion and beyond.
