Groundhog Day Challenge! (for profit or charity!) [CANCELED]

Alright, folks we're going to have a bit of competition for a prize! For the entire day of 2 Feb 2007 (GMT time), this challenge is open to everyone.

The challenge is to pisstake Elvis Presley's "I Can't Help Falling In Love With You" a capella (without musical accompaniment). Actual talent is not required for this event, but you will be judged on 'heart'.
My non-contest attempt

I need exactly several judges to sign up before the event. I haven't decided how to vote, yet. Probably a 1-5 ranking of each entry and a tallied average.

The winner, as judged by the judges (that's what they're for, btw), will receive £10 either via PayPal or to be donated in their name to the b3ta 'I Want My Bloody Icon' foundation.

1st and 2nd runners up will get a special commemorative badge denouncing their singing ability. Everyone who participates will get a handy badge to stick in their profile to let people know that while they may not be that great at singing, they still don't suck.

This competition is co-founded by Jessie, The Ultimate Female Warrior of the Universe (she's going to do a bit of work on the badges and spamming it, and I consulted with her on it). I'm doing the financial backing bit.

We've decided that it should be a straight-through recording of the entire song, allowing for trimming silence off the beginning or end, but no editing or effects.

I'll post details here of a thread to post your entries as the date draws closer. Entries are to be posted as a response to this calendar event to keep things more managable. I do have hosting space if you need it (contact info in my profile or Gaz me). The lovely Gizmo.mp3 has also offered his mp3 hosting services.

Judges:
o Doghorse
o SiX

Fuck it. Due to underwhelming response and b3tan elitist attitudes. DTH wins. I have no interest in continuing this competition.

I can't don't want to sing*, so I'll probably just stick to organising and badge creation

*believe me when I say this is a blessing. I'm not bad at singing, I actually can't get even close. The last person who heard me sing had tears in their eyes in sheer wonderment at the experience...and then their ears started bleeding and I decided to stop

As Jessie eloquently stated

It just keeps it simple and fair.

Technical Suggestions

First of all, I don't do a lot of recording, and I'm sure there are better suggestions.

Hardware: I use a headset (earphones with a boom mic) just like I do for videoconferencing and stuff. This allows me to play the music through the headphones and simply sing along while only recording from the microphone. Headphones and an external mic will probably work if you're in a quiet environment. Others may have better suggestions.

Software: I use Audacity for recording. It's reasonably full-featured for my needs and free. There are versions of it available for most platforms (Win/Mac/*nix). If your recording software doesn't support exporting to MP3, try CD-DA X-tractor (also freeware) or something to convert it afterwards?

Format: I usually save to mp3 for open availability. WAV is too damn big for this silly project. Ogg is also cool, but not many devices support it. Please try to keep it pretty open and of reasonable file size.

Christ, I just came here to see how things were going and I find that you've already given up.

I would have loved to join in, but my mic is fucked. I was about to buy a new one anyway.

It takes more than a day or two to catch people who are in the mood for singing. Don't take it personally if people don't respond right away. You can't hurry love.

^ this, really :\

Probably best to give a bit more than a week warning in order to build up and generate interest. It was posted on a Thursday and I don't know about anyone else, but I usually only get time to sort out this sorta stuff at the weekends..and by the time I saw this, the weekend was long gone.

Honestly appreciate the time and effort gone into setting it up.. hopefully next time :)

And well done Dave (and lovely voice, Sync - even though the random keychanges sound like a warped tape ;))!
