Took me a few views too.
Basically, think of the hook as like a ring with a gap in it on one side. When he hooks the post, the gap is on the outside so he can get the post inside the ring. Then the ring moves around 180 degrees or so in order to place the gap on the inside, leaving the post between the rope and the pole. Quite neat.

Think of it like a rotating door. It lets you through from one side to the other, but there's never a direct opening from inside the building to outside. It works because you pass into a chamber and the chamber itself moves around. There is never an opening from one side to the other at the same time.
