Cats see you as a food source, not much else...
A friend of mine worked with a guy who used to be an EMT (paramedic) in the States. He dealt with a number of "there's a funny smell from flat 42, and we haven't seen old man Jones for a few days" cases.
He said that in majority of cases, if a dog was in the flat, they'd be lying, emaciated at his owners' feet, and possibly growl and try to protect him once they got inside.
When cats were in the flat with no way to get out, more often than not, any exposed flesh on the old codgers body would have been eaten.
