In the past several years they've really expanded civil forfeiture laws and you don't have to be convicted to lose property.
It's a means of revenue for governments (because taxes, fees, riders and surcharges don't get them enough loot) and often people must go through lengthy court battles to get property back. It is, IMHO, a gross violation of the 5th Amendment and a blast to the face of "innocent until proven guilty".
