I've not read a lot about the American Civil War
but from what I have read the UK government tried to hedge their bets a little bit and whilst they believed the Union would win, they didn't want to burn bridges with Southern States.
Don't really know any Texans. The only Americans I've ever really got to know were all Californians or from the East Coast. Only Southerner I've ever really known was a lady from Louisiana who worked in London, who had just about the sexiest accent I've ever heard.

Some southern accents are fantastic, like from Nashville, or around Atlanta. Some sound like their fellating a vacuum clearn.
