It nearly killed their friendship at the time
It was a ridiculously intensive animation project from two guys who had previously worked out how to make computers and cheap animators replicate their original south Park Style. Moving from a world where they had turned something complex into a streamlined process, to the most sophisticated puppet film ever.... hard work.
Also it's a lot more cynical than their previous stuff and picks at actors and racial stuff that I don't think they were completely happy with - A lot of the stuff that's okay in South Park becomes a bit darker and more "uncanny valley" when done with puppets.
I think it's great.
