Which malware can of course use to get access to the operating system. But the files themselves cannot be used for these purposes as they lack the trigger mechanism to run these malicious files. So opening a pdf, xls or doc (or any of the later extensions for that matter) won't cause an explosion of malware on your system

Of course you can trust that a file with the extension .pdf is actually a PDF file
Nobody has ever tricked Windows into opening the wrong program that way.

I open nearly every file I get with no problems.
I'm only nervous if a site I download them from doesn't give me at least 6 popups
