If you can afford it without even thinking about it then it's philanthropy.
If it involves sacrificing a portion of your hard-earned revenue and making compromises elsewhere in your life to accommodate that, then it's just plain old boring giving to charity.

Philanthropy allows your massive ego to choose where the money you don't need is spent, making it look like you actually care about a cause, rather than just giving it to the government as tax.

Yeah there is that tax thing, although I don't believe a nice charitable person like Bill Gates or Bono would abuse that loophole for a second
